Graham Bates - Red Young Hen

I was pleased to judge the club show at Pickering, the entry of 46 was in line with the past few years, more would always be better! The overall quality of the birds was very high, and it was pleasing to see that so many conformed so closely to the Breed Standard.  I thoroughly enjoyed judging them ......

Red

1 Lewis Fryer – 12 x 12 -  A very pleasing bird of overall excellent type. Correct stance. Good feathering. Sound colour and well marked. Unfortunately far too large in the hand.

Best Young Hen & Best Young Bird- Helen Seed -  Ash Red Bar

There were forty entries at Pickering for the British Old Dutch Capuchine Society Club show with only three empty pens. I had some good birds to sort out, not a lot of difference in them, so I think we are getting there after having had to change the Standard a few years ago. Thanks to John Harrison for acting as steward, it would have been difficult to sort out the 'specials' without his  help, especially the young birds as the cocks and hens were in the same classes. We are going to change this for next years club show.

Red
Cock Adult

1 - G Bates. The only bird in the  class but good colour, type and stance.

 Hen Adult

1 - S Jenkins. Good structure and stance.
2 - G Bates. Good colour, nice type.

Young Bird
1 & NPA Certificate - G Bates. Best Young Cock. A good all round pigeon.

Yellow
Cock Adult

1 - S Jenkins. Good colour and nice type, the only bird in the class.

Hen Adult
1 & NPA Certificate - G Bates.  Again a nice bird in all aspects, the only bird in the class.

Young Bird
1 - G Bates. Good structure and colour.

Black
Cock Adult

1 - G Bates. Good type but too many black feathers underneath.

Hen Adult
1 & NPA Certificate - G Bates, also Best Adult Hen and Best Old Dutch Capuchine. Superb in all aspects. I wish we could get this type and stance on to our bar colours.

Blue Bar
Cock Adult

1 - C Wilkinson
2 - Miss H Seed
Two good birds, the winner better on stance.

Hen Adult
1 & NPA Certificate - R Savage. Reserve Best Old Dutch Capuchine. Good type and stance.
2 -  R Savage
3 - C Wilkinson
Both good birds

Young Bird
1 & NPA Certificate – Miss H Seed
 2 - Miss H Seed
3 – R Savage
4 - C Wilkinson
Four nice birds, all different in colour, the winner had best structure.

AOC Bar
Cock Adult

1 – C Wilkinson. Best Adult Cock
2 – C Wilkinson
3 - C Wilkinson
Three good Mealy Bar cocks, the winner having best structure.

Hen Adult
1 - C Wilkinson, Milky Mealy Bar
2 - C Wilkinson, Silver Bar
3 - C Wilkinson, Milky Mealy Bar
Three good birds.

Young Bird
This was my most difficult class with nine entries all good birds, so I spent some time getting each bird to stand as the Standard requires, with the tail being in the horizontal position, some were better than others at this. There were some very nice colour variations, Mealy, both normal and Milky; Cream; Brown; and Milky Blue. I think on another day the prize cards could be moved around.
1 & NPA Certificate - Miss H Seed, Mealy Bar. Best Young Hen. A good all round bird.
2- Miss H Seed, Mealy Bar
3 - Miss H Seed, Brown Bar
Two very nice birds

The Tiger and AOC classes had no entries.

Best in Show - Bye & Walker - Adult Yellow Hen  (2005 bred)

Best Opposite Sex – Bye & Walker - Adult Black Cock (2002 bred)

Best Young Hen & Best Young  Bird - R. Savage - Blue Bar Hen

Best Young Cock - R. Savage - Indigo Bar Cock

RED
The overall standard of the Reds was very good, most with good feathering and carriage. Care needs to be taken with colour otherwise the ash on the secondaries will become too defined, and chequering too apparent. The NPA winner was excellent dense colour, very well presented
Adult Cock
1 Bye & Walker  - 9 x 11 Showing slight ash on secondaries. Good shape crest. Pleasing bird

Adult Hen
1 Bye & Walker - 11 x 10 Nice type hen, good feather. Good carriage. Some ash on secondaries
2 G R Bates - 11 x 12 Nice hen. Feather damage to tail. Some ash on secondaries

2008 Bred Cock or Hen
1 Bye & Walker  - NPA Certificate 10 x 12 An excellent young hen. Lovely crest, well filled mane, excellent rosettes, perfect chain. Excellent dense colour, clean  thighs. Very good carriage
2 G R Bates - 10 x 10 slip flighted. Chain too open

YELLOW
The yellows were generally of very good type and carriage, with good feathering. Markings generally good but far too many show colour to thighs and towards vent. The winning hen was a superb example of the breed.
Adult Cock
1 Bye & Walker - 11 x 10 Good strong bird. Good carriage. Very good hood and mane.

Adult Hen
1 Bye & Walker  - NPA Certificate -  10 x 9 A quality bird of very good type. Excellent carriage. Excellent hood, well filled main, perfect collar. Deep rich colour. Perfect condition and presentation.
2 G R Bates - 11 x 9 Hood and mane a little open feathered.

2008 Bred Cock or Hen
1 G R Bates - 10 x 10 A well marked bird of good type. Hood tending to cap
2 Bye & Walker - 11 x 10 A nice bird but split mane. Hood could be tidied to advantage.
3 G R Bates - 10 x 9 slip flighted. Hood capping slightly. Feather breaking down slightly on wing shield. Hood could be improved.

BLACK
Disappointing there were only 2 blacks entered. The winning cock was a bird of quality
Adult Cock
1  Bye & Walker - NPA Certificate - 10 x 11 A strongly built showy bird. Very good carriage. Excellent feather, well filled mane. Well marked. Dense black.

Adult Hen
1 Bye & Walker 12(?) x 12 A nice hen, looked like a secondary missing. Too much colour under.

TIGER
Very disappointing - none of the birds were in 'show condition' and accordingly I did not award a 1st prize or the NPA Certificate. What  was more disappointing was that all three birds were basically good specimens of the breed and otherwise could all have done well .... it is however a 'beauty show'
Adult Cock
1 Not Awarded
2  C Wilkinson -  Black Tiger. Good stance. Well shaped hood, good chain. Mane very open and  moulty.
3  S Jenkins - Red Tiger. Good type with broad well placed hood. Acceptable marking for a tiger.
4 S Jenkins – Red Tiger. Good type. Needing more colour

BLUE BAR
Some very nice type birds in this colour. The adult cock lost out on moult. The young hen was a superb little hen, excellent feathering and shown in perfect condition. She should do well in the future.
Adult Cock

1  C Wilkinson - 11 x 11 A strong bird. Very good carriage and type. Good shape hood. Mane and  rosettes a little moulty. Bar rather bronze

Adult Hen
1 C Wilkinson - 9 x 10 A quality hen of good type. Collar just a little wide. Overall extremely well marked. Excellent crisp black bars

2008 Bred Cock or Hen
1 R Savage – NPA Certificate 10 x 10 An excellent bird pushed hard for Best ODC. Excellent type and carriage. Superb hood, excellent mane, perfect rosettes. Very good blue with crisp black bars. Just a little foul under
2 R Savage - 10 x 10 Nice bird. Excellent carriage. Good type. Good feathering. Too much colour  under.
3 R Savage - 10 x 11 Hood rather narrow, collar closing a little. Well marked
4 C Wilkinson - 12x 11 A nice enough bird. Good hood. Mane well filled. White feather in mane detracts. Bars rather bronze.

A.O.C. BAR
A very interesting group indeed. Overall very pleasing quality.
